China condemns Japanese ministers' tribute to war criminals at Yasukuni Shrine

China has expressed 'strong dissatisfaction' to Japan after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba sent a ritual offering to a controversial shrine that honours war criminals on the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender. It was a 'blatant provocation against historical justice and human conscience', the Chinese foreign ministry said, referring to the visit to the Yasukuni Shrine on Friday by several Japanese cabinet members. 'To view and treat history correctly is an important prerequisite for Japan's post-war return to the international community and the political foundation for its relations with neighbouring countries,' the ministry said in a statement on Saturday. 'We urge Japan to face and deeply reflect on its history of aggression, act cautiously on issues such as the Yasukuni Shrine, and completely sever ties with militarism.' 06:06 Place of controversy: Japan's Yasukuni Shrine Place of controversy: Japan's Yasukuni Shrine Ishiba did not visit the shrine, but sent a religious ornament. However, several politicians from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), as well as members of the ultranationalist 'Japan first' Sanseito went there in person. Those visiting included Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato and Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi.

China's top diplomat Wang Yi to visit India for first time in 3 years for border talks

Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India for the first time in three years to discuss the latest round of border talks, the Chinese foreign ministry has confirmed. During the trip from August 18 to 20, top diplomat Wang will serve as the 'special representative of the China-India boundary question' in the 24th round of border talks 'at the invitation of the Indian side', according to a Saturday statement from the ministry. This series of negotiations aims to address long-standing border disputes , which have seen a temporary de-escalation following years of tension. Wang is expected to meet top Indian officials including National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. The two last met in Beijing in December to review disengagement in eastern Ladakh along the disputed border, known as the Line of Actual Control, where an estimated 50,000–60,000 troops remain deployed on each side. 'We stand ready to work with India to act on the important common understandings reached between leaders of our two countries, maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, cement political mutual trust, enhance practical cooperation, properly handle differences, and promote the sustained, sound and steady development of China-India ties ,' Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Thursday in response to speculation about a trip by Wang. 'China and India are both major developing countries and important members of the Global South,' he said. 'A cooperative pas de deux of the dragon and the elephant as partners helping each other succeed is the right choice for both sides.'

China cuts ties with Czech president over Petr Pavel's birthday visit to Dalai Lama

Beijing has severed ties with Czech President Petr Pavel following his private visit to congratulate the 14th Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday last month. Advertisement The meeting on July 27 'seriously contravenes the political commitment made by the Czech Republic government to the Chinese government, and harms China's sovereignty and territorial integrity,' said Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian in a statement issued on Tuesday. He said China 'strongly deplores and firmly opposes' the meeting and that Beijing had lodged serious protests with the Czech side. 'In light of the severity of Pavel's provocative action, China [has decided] to cease all engagement with him.' Pavel's spokesman Filip Platos told Czech News Agency (CTK) last month: 'On return from a working visit to Japan, the president took the opportunity to detach himself from the delegation to personally congratulate the Dalai Lama'. Advertisement The meeting marks the first time a sitting Czech president has met the Dalai Lama during his stay in India. Shortly after the meeting, the Chinese embassy in the Czech Republic said it 'resolutely opposed' Pavel's meeting and urged the Czech side to 'abide by its one-China political commitment' and maintain healthy and stable relations.

Attacker wounds Japanese national in China with rock: Tokyo embassy

BEIJING: An "unknown assailant" attacked and wounded a Japanese national accompanied by a child in the Chinese city of Suzhou, Tokyo's embassy said on Friday (Aug 1), calling on Beijing to prevent such incidents. The incident comes a year after a Japanese mother and child were wounded in a knife attack in the same city. A Chinese woman had died trying to stop the assailant. In Thursday's attack, "a Japanese national walking with a child was struck by what appeared to be a rock by an unknown assailant inside a Suzhou, Jiangsu Province subway station", Tokyo's embassy in Beijing told AFP in a statement. A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry told AFP that "the suspect has been apprehended". The victim was "promptly taken to hospital for treatment, and there is no threat to life", the ministry said. China and Japan are key trading partners, but increased friction over territorial rivalries and military spending has frayed ties in recent years. Japan's brutal occupation of parts of China before and during World War II remains a sore point, with Beijing accusing Tokyo of failing to atone for its past. In June last year, a Japanese mother and child were attacked in Suzhou on the anniversary of the 1931 "Mukden incident", known in China as a day of national humiliation. The 1931 explosion of a railway in China was used by Japanese soldiers as a pretext to occupy the city of Mukden, now called Shenyang, and invade the wider region of Manchuria. And in September, a Japanese schoolboy was fatally stabbed in the southern city of Shenzhen. Media reports about the latest attack in Suzhou were censored on the Chinese messaging app WeChat. "The Japanese government has urged the Chinese government to ... severely punish the suspect, prevent similar incidents, and ensure the safety of Japanese nationals", Tokyo's embassy said on Friday.
